Communication

“I am a big fan of a well placed question and "When you say "strategy" what do you want me to see?" was one of those moments where a question just lands!”

Head of Organisational Design and Development, Sight Scotland.

Beginning

TheWholeStory worked with Sight Scotland during the early stages of the executive team clarifying their 5-year strategy, mission and aims, then to engage their leaders with it and on to support how they would launch it throughout the charity and to their partners and stakeholders.

Sight Scotland were asking questions about what the charity’s future looked like; setting a direction of travel, reflecting on the original intents of the charity but also redefining them for today, which could mean losing strongly held beliefs.

We offered our workshops as means of looking at their strategy through the creation of communication that each individual leader could feel confident in, would be part of a shared understanding and would connect to and relate to different audiences. This very practical approach would help ensure the strategy, vision and mission were tangible and framed around and for those who would do the work of the charity or benefit from it. Translating strategic thinking into real, human communication.

Middle

The Executive team took a day with us to build what they each needed to say now about the strategy (a year before its launch) to a particular audience – however during the workshop we made a powerful pivot: instead of creating the communication for an external audiences they made each other their audience.

This shift unlocked deeper alignment. Through the storytelling exercises and the discussions they stimulated, they gained clarity about what they believed, where they differed, and what needed to be said—and heard—before sharing the vision more widely.

The workshop gave the executive team a shared language, alignment, and confidence. It created a space for surfacing differing interpretations, addressing tough questions, and crafting communication that felt authentic and united.

End

This group of 8 from the exec team went on to take part in the next workshops with other leaders within the charity. This cross-level collaboration built communication skills across the organisation and ensured everyone was actively involved in (and influenced) how the strategy was understood, developed and communicated throughout the charity.

Our practical, story-led approach helped Sight Scotland ensure their strategy was something everyone could connect with and act on.

“Amazing sessions! The team at theWholeStory are top notch, and make hard work fun! Would definitely recommend Lily Pender and Josh Gaillemin to anyone interested in developing their skills in real communication!”

Chief Executive, Sight Scotland.
