Here are some examples of storytelling and thoughts on why it’s useful.

Science of Storytelling, Will Storr.

This is a well written book, very easy to read, that explains how we as humans evolved and are wired with storytelling. The science and art of it are brought together to explain our essential and everyday use of storytelling.

Here is a review.

The Magical Science of Storytelling, David JP Phillips

Why is Storytelling so powerful? And how do we use it to our advantage? Presentations expert David JP Phillips shares key neurological findings on storytelling and with the help of his own stories, induces in us the release of four neurotransmitters. We liked how this explains what happens to us when we hear good storytelling.

The Missing Crypto Queen

The first episode of this BBC podcast is a good example of the application of many of the techniques we use in Sharing the Message. (A Story Map and especially a Hook, Perspectives, Focus and 3 Layers).

Nannette

Nanette is a live performance written and performed by Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby (some of which may be triggering), which debuted in 2017. The work includes social commentary, evocative speech punctuated by comedy and emotive narration of Gadsby's life, learnings and what her story offers to the world. We love the way she plays with the relationship between herself, us the audience and her story and the expectations we have as we watch. It is available on Netflix. They present a wide range of theme-based storytelling events, often featuring prominent literary, cultural personalities and regular people. You can find their podcasts (or go to live events in the UK, one day…) to hear a contemporary take on storytelling.

Where it all began...

We wanted to pay tribute Sally Pomme Clayton, a fantastic storytelling performer, teacher and member of the Crick Crack Club that have done and continue to do so much to bring storytelling to the fore in the UK and internationally. Josh was incredibly fortunate to study under Pomme at university, giving him a lifelong love of storytelling and all it can achieve. Do check out there fantastic site here: Home - Crick Crack Club
