The Geffrye Museum
Young Volunteers Project.

Situation:
The Geffrye Museum has a strong relationship with its volunteers and were looking to run an innovative project for the young volunteers as part of London Museums Hub Youth Participation Scheme. The volunteers had varying degrees of skills and confidence, and for some English was a second language.

Solution:
In the build-up to Hackney Heritage week we ran a 1-week project with 7 young volunteers from both Hackney Museum and the Geffrye. During the week using a variety of storytelling techniques and tools they each created a tour inspired by their personal reaction to something that interested them in either of the museums.

Results:
The young volunteers gave tours throughout Hackney Heritage week. They continued to work on their presentations so as to be able to reproduce them at half term and other busy periods. The young volunteers all appreciated the improved confidence they felt to express and communicate their ideas and how they could take the skills learnt into their school and college work.
The project has been repeated in 2009, with even greater attendance and success.

“A really useful day, we’re definitely going to include the ideas you brought to re-invigorate sessions (especially for foundation stage groups) and the methodology for learning and telling stories, which we use across our offer.”
